About the project
This piece is inspired by Wadsworth A. Jarrell Sr’s print, Revolutionary. In this piece, the phrase “black is beautiful” and “black is bad” are blended together over multiple printed layers to create a portrait of Angela Davis. To allude to his work, I superimposed Nina Simone’s iconic lyrics, `To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,’ on a pair of coveralls to pay homage to the generations of black GM and Ford workers in Detroit.
I used mx immersion dying to create the purple, red, and yellow hues. I used a laser cutter to cut out a paper stencil to screen print the white lyrics onto the fabric.
