About the project
Love’s in Need of Love Today tries to imitate the materiality, texture, and form of records. The ensemble includes vinyl armor boots and a piped corset. I drafted a color-blocked corset to be a circle radiating from the sides of the garment. The colors of the corset, yellow, red, and maroon, allude to the album art of Stevie Wonders’ album, Song in the Key of Life which begins with the song Love’s in Need of Love Today. The song speaks to the injustices of the world and the importance of love and compassion for others. I specifically associate this song with my mother crying to it after the 2020 police brutality protests. I used yarn and topstitched the corset to create piping that followed the curves of the color-blocked circles and emulated the texture of a record. Finally, I backed black tinted vinyl with black duck cloth and designed an armature to cover boots to emulate the materiality of a record.
